When Melissa came to Children's Futures three years ago, she was 6 months pregnant, 21 years old and virtually alone. While her story might not make headlines, it's one example of how Children's Futures helps those who need it most. Before Melissa came to Children's Futures she was on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and by her own admission, "I didn't know anything about babies." Melissa's life began to change when she enrolled in the Children's Futures' home visiting program and met West Ward family support worker Maria Morales. Maria helped Melissa secure health insurance, find a physician, and receive the support necessary to prepare for the birth of baby Kayla. Now three, Kayla is a healthy, active child who loves books. "We attended a Children's Futures' family literacy program together on Saturdays. Ever since Kayla laid her eyes on a book, she has chosen books over toys," Melissa said. Kayla also attends a Trenton child care center that participates in the Children's Futures' program. Now 24, Melissa has her own apartment, a driver's license, a van and a full-time job with a health insurance company. Melissa credits her family support worker Maria with helping her achieve these milestones. "Maria is close to the family and a friend to me. She gave me insights on everything," Melissa said. And through her job with the health insurance company, Melissa is now helping families enrolled in Children's Futures' West Ward obtain their own health coverage. As Melissa explained, "Helping other families is one way I can give something back to the program that helped me and Kayla so much." |
